Hot dogs may be simple, but when done right, they’re absolutely perfect—crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and bursting with flavor in every bite. Whether you’re hosting a backyard cookout or throwing together a quick family meal, we’re here to show you how to grill a hot dog that tastes like summer.
At Sussex Meat Packing, we believe even the simplest meals deserve your best effort—and the best ingredients. So, here’s our no-fail guide to grilling the perfect hot dog.
Step 1: Start with a Great Dog
Not all hot dogs are created equal. Skip the grocery store basics and go for a quality, butcher-made hot dog with real meat, natural casings, and bold flavor.
We make our own hot dogs in-house (or source from trusted makers), with real cuts of beef and pork—none of the mystery stuff. Come taste the difference!
Step 2: Prep the Grill, Not the Dogs
You don’t need to do much to a good hot dog. No slicing, scoring, or poking—just leave them whole so they stay juicy.
Preheat your grill to medium heat. Not high—hot dogs aren’t steaks, and too much heat can split the casing before the inside is warmed through.
Step 3: Grill ‘Em Slow & Turn Often
Place your hot dogs perpendicular to the grill grates (this gives you those classic grill marks). Rotate them every minute or two for even browning.
Total cooking time: 7–10 minutes
They’re done when they’re lightly blistered, evenly browned, and slightly crisp on the outside.
Avoid flare-ups by moving the dogs away from direct flames if fat drips cause flare.
Step 4: Toast the Buns (Please!)
While your hot dogs are finishing up, toss your buns on the grill for 30 seconds to 1 minute—just enough to get warm and slightly golden.
Bonus: Brush them with a little melted butter or olive oil for extra flavor.
Step 5: Build It Your Way
Here’s where things get fun. Go classic or creative—there’s no wrong answer (okay, maybe ketchup only is a little sad).
Classic Combo:
Yellow mustard
Relish
Chopped onions
Butcher’s Favorites:
Spicy Dog: Jalapeños, pepper jack cheese, chipotle mayo
BBQ Dog: Cheddar, crispy onions, BBQ sauce
Chicago-Style: Mustard, relish, onion, tomato, pickle spear, sport peppers, celery salt
Southern Style: Slaw, chili, mustard

It’s the Little Things That Make it Great!
A perfect hot dog isn’t just about the grill marks. It’s about the quality, the care, and the people you’re cooking for. And around here, that’s what we’re all about.
